Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) status is a form of immigration relief for minors who have been abused, neglected, or abandoned by one or both parents. It allows eligible minors to apply for lawful permanent residency (green card) in the U.S. and provides protection from deportation.

What are the qualifications for SIJ Status?

To qualify for SIJ Status, minors must meet the following criteria:

  • Child must be under the age of 21 years
  • Must have a state juvenile (family) court order declaring that the minor has been abused, neglected, or abandoned by one or both parents
  • The Juvenile court must determine that it is not in the minor's best interests to return to their home country
  • Must be present in the US and not in immigration detention
